Quintilian's treatise on the art of oratory is an exhaustive encyclopedia of Roman educational practices that has been treasured for centuries by Western scholars for both its scope and depth. This hypertextual version of the Institutes is an edited version of all twelve books from the 1856 English translation of the Rev. John Selby Watson. Frontpiece from the Rev. William Shepherd's The Life of Poggio Bracciolini. Liverpool: Harris Brothers, 1837. In 1416, Poggio discovered a complete manuscript of Quintilian in the basement of the monastery at St. Gall near Constance, Switzerland. Prior to this, much of the West had known only portions of Quintilian's work.
