The use of MOOs in education is an international venture, as Avigail Oren
of the Tel Aviv
University School of Education Knowledge Techology Lab can attest.
Oren has teamed up with others on Grassroots MOO to create the
Jerusalem space and prove that "MOOing is More
than Writing." On Grassroots MOO, students from all over the
world can share and compare their cultures, and collaborate on
projects. Oren provides us with some helpful theory on why MOOs
are appropriate for education, what MOOs are, and ties the use of
MOO to constructionist theory of knowledge-building and information
literacy.
Not just college classes have tapped the potential of MOOs and MUDs;
according to Howard Rheingold in his personal essay "MariMUSE: Online Fantasy Worlds Benefit Inner City
School,"
students in the Phoenix schools are also practicing their
communication skills and exercising their imaginations in virtual
worlds.
