(Salvo's Story) Making the transition from graduate student at Texas Tech to Assistant Professor at Northeastern and realizing I had to begin making my tenure case has forced me offline more than I would prefer. Moving, first, from basic writing to rhetoric to technical communication (and from Binghamton to Lubbock to Boston) has made me aware just how difficult it was for earlier generations of Computers & Writing scholars to justify their online scholarship, many of whom have published in Kairos and elsewhere online. The initial promise of the Web of a democratic space where basic access allowed participation in the exchange of ideas still exists, although the context is different. The promise and potential will continue to exist so long as graduate students seize or even invent opportunities, and act to realize their vision.
