Event Description:

Welcome to the Virtual Team Teaching (VTT) Project

     INFORMATION

You will be working in small groups with students in other
writing classes at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville,
Georgian Court College, and Florida Atlantic University.

The goal of each group of students will be to produce together a
web page that examines a topic from various perspectives. First
you must choose one of the following general topic areas:

Topic I: History and the Movies

Groups may choose one of the following:

Schindler's List, A League of Their Own, Amistad, Apollo 13,
Braveheart, Dances With Wolves, Evita, Glory, Field of
     Dreams, or Mississippi Burning.

Movie web sites MUST include, on the index page, the group's
collaboratively written critical review of the movie, and must
     examine the following subtopics:

     1. Historical sources used for the movie and the differences
between the actual historical event and the film's depiction of the
     event

     2. The social impact of the historical event (and/or the movie)

     3. Critical reviews of the movie

Movie web sites MAY also examine the following subtopics:

     4. The role of the film's director and his or her impact on the film

     5. The actors' preparations for their roles

     6. Critical reviews of the actors' performances

Topic II: Time in a Capsule

The twentieth century has brought inventions and discoveries that
have changed the face of the nation, if not the world. Build a
web site that explores these changes. How have inventions/ideas
made the 20th century different from earlier ages? How have
they improved the quality of human life? Think of your audience
as future generations. In addition to describing the benefits of
each change, discuss the general qualities that are most
important for them to know about our century. There are two
     ways to do this:

     A. A century capsule web page would present the most
important twentieth century inventions or ideas that shape our
world as we enter a new century. Each web site should have a
focus: medicine, business, the arts, engineering, politics, etc.

     B. A decade capsule web page, rather than restricting choices to
a particular field, would present the significant inventions and
ideas in several areas of a particular decade.

Topic III: Great Americans of the Twentieth Century

What makes a person great in his/her own time? What types of
people have been recognized as great in America in the 20th
century? How have the qualities and types of people associated
with greatness changed from the beginning to the end of this
century? How do the people recognized as great reflect changes
in American attitudes toward gender and ethnicity during this
     century?

Set up a website that addresses the questions above by
comparing the careers of 5 or 6 great/celebrated Americans of
this century. Your chosen people should have been famous in
different decades (ideally, some should have been famous before
1940) and should have been recognized for work in similar or
comparable fields (e.g., literature, sports, politics, entertainment,
     education, philanthropy).

     INTRODUCTIONS

This first assignment allows you to introduce yourself to your
fellow students in the other classes, to choose a general topic
area you'd like to work on for this project, and to begin
discussing more specific areas within the topics that you'd like to
     explore.

     What to do now:

Choose the topic that you would like to work on and go to its
cafe table by clicking the "Back" button on your browser and
then the name of your topic in the list of cafe tables. There you
will find instructions on what to do next.

Ideas on Great Americans in the 20th Century

Greetings! I am a student from SIU-Edwardsville. I chose "Great Americans of the 20th Century," because I think that the 20th century has given America a great number of exciting, interesting, and intriguing people. Although, I am ignorant of how to build a website, I do consider myself a good writer. I enjoy writing about things, people, and places that interest me, and I know I will be valuable to this group.

A few ideas I have about the specific Americans we can put on our webpage are: Mark McGuire, who broke Babe Ruth's home run record in 98'; Craig Venter, who has come to the forefront in the advancement in genetic technology; Michael Jordan, who brought the game of basketball to a new level.

I wrote a research paper on Craig Venter this past school year. I spent a considerable amount of time researching his life and his career. Furthermore, I researched genetics in general, and I contain quite a bit of knowledge about he subject. Genetics has proven to be one of the most amazing advancements this century, and it will continue far into the future, so I believe it would be valuable to the webpage if we include Craig Venter.

Hi, I'm a Freshman at Florida Atlantic University. I feel that I have many qualities which would make me a good group member. I am a very outgoing guy and am always open to other people's suggestions. I feel that I have a skill in discovering what the deeper message is behind most movies. Going to the movies is a favorite pastime of mine, and I always appreciate every film I see because it is an expression of art to me. One aspect of the movie Braveheart that I would like to address is the literature or folklore from which the legends of William Wallace are based on, and whether or not the portrayal of Wallace is more factual than fictional, or vice versa. Two other films that I would really like to do some work with are Amistad and Field of Dreams. I am especially interested in the development of the main characters in these movies.
