The following
are copies of chatroom transcripts from two student groups during our Fall
1999 Project.
Fall 1999 Chatroom Transcripts
Some groups, such as this one, accomplished
quite a bit in their chats:
-
Student 1 (Oct 27 1999 7:20PM)
-
Hello Student 2 and 3, It is hard to believe I finally was able to log
on to the Internet. It has been busy all night long. Student 3, I like
your suggestions. I think if we focus on the changes war causes, we build
a nice web page. Who do you think our audience will be? Also, how are we
going to present this? Perhaps we can find some pictures of the real players
to put in the web page.
-
Student 2 (Oct 27 1999 7:31PM)
-
Ok, I read it. Does Student 3 know that we were going to get on here tonight?
-
(Note: We sometimes had technical problems during this semester with
students getting knocked out of the Studio chatrooms. Since neither
of these students signed off here, that is what appears to happened.
-
Student 2 (Oct 29 1999 3:34PM)
-
Hi Student 1!
-
Student 1 (Oct 29 1999 3:34PM)
-
Hello Student 2!
-
Student 2 (Oct 29 1999 3:35PM)
-
I just read the messages Student 3 posted and she has some good ideas!
-
Student 2 (Oct 29 1999 3:35PM)
-
Better than ours I think!!
-
Student 1 (Oct 29 1999 3:38PM)
-
I agree, in fact I was thinking about a topic based on her ideas. What
do you think about the topic of our web page as "The Life and Times of
AAGPBL". Does that sound to much like a old saying?
-
Student 2 (Oct 29 1999 3:38PM)
-
That sounds great!!
-
Student 2 (Oct 29 1999 3:40PM)
-
I hope Student 3 remembered that we were meeting.
-
Student 1 (Oct 29 1999 3:41PM)
-
Now, what about our audience? Should we list the web page audience as sports
minded people? May be we should include people who are interested in history
also.
-
Student 2 (Oct 29 1999 3:43PM)
-
I think we'll have a wide variety of people interested in it. people interested
in sports, history, certain actors, and probably other things.
-
Student 1 (Oct 29 1999 3:44PM)
-
I hope Student 3 remembers we are meeting today also. I would like to talk
or write with her on line.
-
Student 1 (Oct 29 1999 3:46PM)
-
I am going to go back to Student 3's message for a moment. I want to print
them out. I will be back in a minute.
-
Student 1 (Oct 29 1999 3:50PM)
-
I am back. Perhaps Student 3 is having a hard time getting on line. Have
you had any more ideas for the proposal?
-
Student 2 (Oct 29 1999 3:51PM)
-
Actually I've been coming up with what we sortof have at this point. The
topic would be what you said, "The Life and Times of AAGPBL." The audience
would be what I said, maybe. I'm not sure exactly what the purpose is.
I guess it is to inform people of the AAGPBL and how it was a part of history.
It will contain history of the time period, facts about the movie and characters
and I guess our opinions of the movie. I don't know how it will be organized.
And i'm not sure what we can use for pictures.
-
Student 2 (Oct 29 1999 3:52PM)
-
I think that summed up what we have so far. I looked at each question and
wrote what we talked about.
-
Student 1 (Oct 29 1999 3:57PM)
-
For the site's purpose, we can state "to raise an awareness of the league
and the role it played during the war. Do we each need to turn in a proposal,
or do we write up one proposal and turn it in with each of our names on
it? I realize this probable sounds like a dumb question, but I am still
alittle unsure of this.
-
Student 2 (Oct 29 1999 3:58PM)
-
I'm pretty sure we turn in one proposal. Let me check. I'll be right back.
-
Student 2 (Oct 29 1999 4:00PM)
-
Yeah. We turn in one proposal. I don't know where the proposal is supposed
to be posted though. Just like what we've been doing with our messages??
-
Student 1 (Oct 29 1999 4:03PM)
-
Maybe we should post it both in the cafe and have a hard copy of it. We
also may want to say it to one of our disk.
-
Student 2 (Oct 29 1999 4:03PM)
-
That's a good idea. Who's going to type the proposal?
-
Student 1 (Oct 29 1999 4:06PM)
-
My suggestion is; I can type it up with the information we have put together
so far. Then I can e-mail it to you and Student 3. You and Student 3 can
make changes and/or adjustments to it, and e-mail it back to everyone.
-
Student 2 (Oct 29 1999 4:07PM)
-
So are we going to wait for Student 3 any longer??
-
Student 2 (Oct 29 1999 4:08PM)
-
I'm fine with you emailing it and everything. I don't want you to have
to do all of the work though. Are you ok with doing that?
-
Student 1 (Oct 29 1999 4:10PM)
-
No, I don't think Student 3 will be joining us. Yes, I am fine with typing
up the proposal. Just as long as you and Student 3 can help with the little
details I might miss or leave out.
-
Student 1 (Oct 29 1999 4:10PM)
-
Actually, it is the grammer that you will need to check most of all.
-
Student 2 (Oct 29 1999 4:11PM)
-
Sure!! I'll leave a message for Student 3 letting her know that you'll
be emailing us the proposal.
-
Student 1 (Oct 29 1999 4:13PM)
-
Peggy had suggested that she would research the history, and the two of
us could do the research on the biographies and the way the war changed
the roles. I think this maybe a good idea. Do you have a preference as
to which you would like to do?
-
Student 2 (Oct 29 1999 4:14PM)
-
I don't care what I do. You can pick.
-
Student 1 (Oct 29 1999 4:17PM)
-
Right now I am working on a paper for Western Civilization class on WWI.
So, since I am getting to know the sources for information on wars, I'll
do the research on how WWII changed the traditional roles of men and women.
-
Student 2 (Oct 29 1999 4:18PM)
-
Ok, so i'm doing the biographies right?
-
Student 1 (Oct 29 1999 4:20PM)
-
Yes, if that is all right with you. How many biographies do you think we
need? Perhaps, just on the main characters of the movie. I suppose we can
worry about that later. It was a thought that just came to my mind.
-
Student 2 (Oct 29 1999 4:22PM)
-
Yeah, i'll figure it out. Well, email me if you have any problems. It's
ceruz@hotmail.com. Now you don't have to look it up.
-
Student 1 (Oct 29 1999 4:23PM)
-
Thank you! Have a good weekend! I'll send that e-mail tonight or tomorrow
morning.
-
Student 2 (Oct 29 1999 4:24PM)
-
Ok. I'll be sure to read through it. Have a nice weekend!
-
Student 1 (Nov 3 1999 7:07PM)
-
Hello Student 1, I finally was able to get on to the Internet. I have been
trying since 7:00pm. Have you had a chance to read the assignment?
-
Student 2 (Nov 3 1999 7:08PM)
-
yes, i read the assignment but i still haven't read the introductions.
i just finished typing a paper i've been working on all week. what a relief!!
-
Student 1 (Nov 3 1999 7:09PM)
-
What class was your paper for?
-
Student 2 (Nov 3 1999 7:11PM)
-
Math 111. The school requires us to write a paper in that class. I'm glad
i'm done! now I can concentrate on this project.
-
Student 1 (Nov 3 1999 7:12PM)
-
I am working on a paper for my Western Civilization class. I wish I could
say the same that I was finished.
-
Student 1 (Nov 3 1999 7:14PM)
-
It doesn't look like Student3 will make it again tonight. We could talk
about this assignment tomorrow in class.
-
Student 2 (Nov 3 1999 7:15PM)
-
that will work. that's funny! i was thinking the same thing!!
-
Student 1 (Nov 3 1999 7:16PM)
-
See you in class tomorrow. Are you ready for the quiz?
-
Student 2 (Nov 3 1999 7:17PM)
-
no, i need to finish reading those packets. i guess i better go read those.
i'll see you tomorrow!!
-
Student 1 (Nov 10 1999 6:56PM)
-
Hello Student2 and Student 3!
-
Student 2 (Nov 10 1999 7:03PM)
-
Hi! I just remembered that I was supposed to get on here.
-
Student 1 (Nov 10 1999 7:03PM)
-
Thank you for posting the invitations to have our proposal reviewed.
-
Student 1 (Nov 10 1999 7:05PM)
-
Have you had a chance to start on the biographs?
-
Student 2 (Nov 10 1999 7:05PM)
-
You're welcome. I thought it was my turn to do something.
-
Student 2 (Nov 10 1999 7:06PM)
-
I noticed that you weren't in class yesterday. You missed a quiz but that's
about it.
-
Student 1 (Nov 10 1999 7:07PM)
-
I was planning on working on these the week of Thanksgiving. Tonight, I
am the one who just finished writing an essay. I haven't had time to do
much other than research for that paper.
-
Student 2 (Nov 10 1999 7:07PM)
-
No, I haven't started the biographies. Do you think I should look where
you were looking the other day?
-
Student 1 (Nov 10 1999 7:11PM)
-
That is probably not a bad idea. Prehaps tomorrow we can figure out who
we want to look-up. I'm sorry, I am so tired tonight. Maybe we should try
to met here earlier. Do you mind if we talk before or after class tomorrow?
-
Student 2 (Nov 10 1999 7:12PM)
-
That's fine! I can get there early or we can talk after class. I don't
work until 10.
-
Student 1 (Nov 10 1999 7:14PM)
-
Lets talk after class. See you tomorrow!
-
Student 2 (Nov 10 1999 7:14PM)
-
See ya!!
-
This is the only chatroom entry for Student 3
-
Student 3 (Nov 11 1999 9:48AM)
-
Student 1 and Student 2: Student 2 I really liked your summry of what our
paper is all about. "to raise an awareness of the league and the role it
played during the war" One of the things I have discovered in my research
is that the major newspapers of the day, specifically the Chicago Tribue
and the New York Times, did not approve of the girls professional baseball
league. They showed their disapproval by NOT including the AAGPBL in the
commentaries on the sports page. They did not consider the league as news
worthy. I am making good headway on writing about the history of the league.
The Baseball Hall of Fame had a ton of neat stuff. I have a copy of their
code of conduct, their charm school instructions and the requirements if
one of the players wanted to go out to dinner with a male admirer.
Other groups, such as this one, accomplished
got aquainted their chats:
-
N. (Oct 26 1999 7:01AM)
-
This is N. from siue. I am available usually at nights to chat about the
project. I hope to see some messages about getting together some
time soon.
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:02PM)
-
grrrr stupid computer isn't working right
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:05PM)
-

-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:09PM)
-
Anyway, so is everyone on and able to talk/chat?
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:09PM)
-
what is wrong with you computers??????
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:09PM)
-
is H. not meeting us today?
-
S (Oct 28 1999 2:09PM)
-
who knows, I think my problems (with the computer) is solved
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:10PM)
-
well, what do we need to accomplish today?
-
N. (Oct 28 1999 2:11PM)
-
do u ladies know how to do web pages?
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:11PM)
-
Nope
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:11PM)
-
i have know idea what i am doing when it comes to web pages
-
N. (Oct 28 1999 2:11PM)
-
me neither
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:12PM)
-
does anyone?
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:12PM)
-
i think we are in trouble
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:12PM)
-
However, I have computer nerd friends that could probably help us out if
we need it
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:12PM)
-
i wonder if H. knows?
-
N. (Oct 28 1999 2:12PM)
-
i agree. this is kinda stupid anyhow
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:13PM)
-
i also have a friend in a computer class that may know something
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:13PM)
-
don't think so L., but she might
-
N. (Oct 28 1999 2:13PM)
-
are u all in the same english class or something?
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:13PM)
-
Anyway, forgetting the fact that none of us know how to make the actual
web page, lets talk about what we want on it. Sound like a plan?
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:14PM)
-
well we need to write a proposal for our web page, it would be kind of
hard to do it like this
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:14PM)
-
yeah we are N.
-
N. (Oct 28 1999 2:14PM)
-
i say we have lots of pictures so we dont have to write much
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:14PM)
-
lets just talk about some of our ideas and then we can look back at this
for a referance
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:15PM)
-
ok, so do we want to do the music/art theme?
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:15PM)
-
yes
-
N. (Oct 28 1999 2:15PM)
-
huh?
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:15PM)
-
sorry N., you havent heard our ideas yet
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:15PM)
-
N., where are you confused.
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:16PM)
-
we thought about using a art/music theme instead of the regular old time
capsule
-
N. (Oct 28 1999 2:16PM)
-
oh
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:17PM)
-
we can talk about how they have evolved over the past hundred years
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:17PM)
-
music/art as it changed through the century
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:17PM)
-
im sorry, we havent even consulted with you about your ideas, do you want
to do something else
-
N. (Oct 28 1999 2:17PM)
-
whatever. sounds fine to me.
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:18PM)
-
are you sure?
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:18PM)
-
it doesnt really matter we just thought that this would be interesting
and original
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:18PM)
-
n., what did you ahv ein mind?
-
N. (Oct 28 1999 2:18PM)
-
yeah, i'm not much into art but i like music.
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:19PM)
-
well that's good because S. is into art
-
N. (Oct 28 1999 2:19PM)
-
this sounds fine
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:19PM)
-
sorry my spelling is getting a little sloppy:(
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:19PM)
-
lol, no L. I'm into music...you know Music minor
-
N. (Oct 28 1999 2:20PM)
-
dont worry about it
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:20PM)
-
oh i thought it was the other way around
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:20PM)
-
don't worry about the spelling, mines always like that
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:20PM)
-
well we can just do music if we want to
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:20PM)
-
Nope, that's ok, I do know some about it
-
N. (Oct 28 1999 2:20PM)
-
uh oh, who likes art?
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:21PM)
-
ok, let me start over, I like art, know some history, my strong point is
in music history though
-
N. (Oct 28 1999 2:21PM)
-
i know as much about art as i do about gardening
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:22PM)
-
have a green thumb nate?
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:22PM)
-
we can start out with both and decide later if we want to narrow it down
-
N. (Oct 28 1999 2:22PM)
-
i dont think so
-
N. (Oct 28 1999 2:22PM)
-
sounds fine.
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:23PM)
-
N., you sound like you have a sense of humor
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:23PM)
-
That sounds good L.
-
N. (Oct 28 1999 2:23PM)
-
just a little, i think....yeah.
-
S (Oct 28 1999 2:24PM)
-
L/N did you read what I put in the Writer's exchange
-
N. (Oct 28 1999 2:24PM)
-
anyhow, are we gonna have multiple pages or links?
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:24PM)
-
so should we start with out with some research or what
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:24PM)
-
i dont think so
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:25PM)
-
N., do you know anything about making web pages?
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:25PM)
-
L., basicly I responded to your comments, and added that a way we can look
at art/music could be by the way it pushed socity/morals/what ever to the
edge. (freedom of speech, etc)
-
N. (Oct 28 1999 2:26PM)
-
like i said, about as much as i do about sewing.
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:27PM)
-
i think i did read it, that is definatly a different way to go about it
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:27PM)
-
N., sorry, I'm a little slow. to answer your question, what do you think
about making a time line on the first page with links to other pages. (click
on 1940's to get to one page, etc.)
-
N, (Oct 28 1999 2:27PM)
-
no prob
-
N. (Oct 28 1999 2:27PM)
-
sounds good
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:28PM)
-
yeah L., it's different, do you think that's a good way to go about it
though?
-
N. (Oct 28 1999 2:29PM)
-
i just read your thing on writer's exchange and that is original
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:29PM)
-
I'm trying to watch it, I don't want to dominate the group, I want you
guys to put in your ideas too
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:29PM)
-
i was just going to ask if there was any different way we can go about
this that isnt boring, and i really like it, we can add pictures along
the way and really make it look cool
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:29PM)
-
Does anyone have a scanner?
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:30PM)
-
is there any way we could incorporate the pictures of art with the sound
of music
-
N. (Oct 28 1999 2:30PM)
-
we could show how they have changed throughout the century and then predict
how they will progress through the next. that is kinda farout though.
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:31PM)
-
Yeah there is L., but it will take a lot of time and I think its kind of
complicated. We will deffinately need help in that case
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:31PM)
-
i dont have a scanner, but nancy said that she has a digital camera that
we can use in class to put pictures on the web
-
N. (Oct 28 1999 2:31PM)
-
no scanner here, but i might, little chance, be able to get one.
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:31PM)
-
n., good idea
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:32PM)
-
we can also go to kinko's to scan stuff...ok so that can be taken care
of
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:32PM)
-
I agree too n.
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:32PM)
-
maybe make predictions for the new millenium i dont know the whole new
millenium thing is kind of cheesy
-
N. (Oct 28 1999 2:33PM)
-
whatever, i just kinda thought of it. if it sucks u can tell me.
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:33PM)
-
how do we put music on a computer??????
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:34PM)
-
last year i did power point and i knew how to use music with it, but i
have know idea if it is similar
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:35PM)
-
I know there is a way of using MP3's guess I'll need to start asking around
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:36PM)
-
I'll also run home this weekend and get all my notes on music history,
so I'll have them for Tuesday
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:36PM)
-
sorry im a little slow with keeping up with the conversation
-
N. (Oct 28 1999 2:37PM)
-
sorry, i got rid of those notes last year...:)
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:37PM)
-
that's ok l., as I stated earlier, I'm always a little slow
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:37PM)
-
so basically, we just need to write a proposal and answer the questions
in 4.1
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:37PM)
-
N., we never asked, what year are you, major/minor, do you live in the
dorms, etc.
-
N. (Oct 28 1999 2:38PM)
-
frosh and engineering
-
N. (Oct 28 1999 2:38PM)
-
in the dorms
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:39PM)
-
if we would all get our ideas together over the weekend, we could just
write the proposal on monday, im sure it wouldnt take too long?
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:39PM)
-
L., what were the questions in 4.1?
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 2:43PM)
-
what do we want to include, who will get anything out of our web
page, what is the purpose , i cant remember the rest
-
N. (Oct 28 1999 2:43PM)
-
yeah
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 2:43PM)
-
ok, I'll go take a look, I'll be right back
-

just basic questions about what we want to include in our page

here they are:What is the topic of your web site? Try to define it more
narrowly than just the movie title, decade, or century focus you're starting
with. What is the audience you'll expect? Think about who would find this
site interesting and/or useful. What is the site's purpose? In other words,
how will visitors benefit from your site? What will be significant or important
about it? What exactly will it contain? Think about the type of information
and analysis you'll do, as well as sources you'll draw on. How will it
be organized? See the guidelines below for a general sense of how your
site might come together. What information might be best conveyed by pictures
or other images? (Be aware of copyright laws!) What types of related web
sites might be useful to link from your site

okay, i dont think that our proposal has to be set in stone, meaning i

I agree L., so do we want to go with the whole art music idea?
-
N. (Oct 28 1999 3:00PM)
-

-
L. (Oct 28 1999 3:00PM)

-
S. (Oct 28 1999 3:00PM)
-
N., it's a sound you make when you are agrivated, or at least I do
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 3:01PM)
-
yeh lets just go with it we can always narrow or expand our idea
-
N. (Oct 28 1999 3:01PM)
-
okay.
-
N. (Oct 28 1999 3:01PM)
-

I think that, as discussed earlier, we should have the opening page of
our web site designed as an actual time line......
-
N. (Oct 28 1999 3:02PM)
-
okay
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 3:02PM)
-
....then a person who clicks onto our site can choose the decade they want,
and it will decribe the music/art of that time....
-
L. (Oct 28 1999 3:02PM)
-
that sounds great
-
S. (Oct 28 1999 3:03PM)
-
....thus creating a sort of compare contrast theme

Hi guys, I have read all that has been going on. I do know how to do
webpages. I also have a scanner, and I know how to put music on the computer.
Anyway, I can not meet tonight at 8 because the lady that I work with,
her daughter is pregnant and in labor. She has to be at the house just
in case it is time to rush to the hospital. Sorry!!! Let me know about
the trip to St. Louis. I am open almost all week. Just let me know. Thanks!!
Sorry again!
