About Frames
The version of Kairos that you are reading makes use of a new feature included with the Netscape 2.0 browser called frames. Frames represents a great leap forward in browser ability, allowing the display of multiple URLs in a single window. Each frame within a window can be individually changed and updated allowing the user to display content from various sources simultaneously, without the need to switch back and forth between different windows.

The Kairos Shell
Kairos makes use of several different frames in order to display its own articles, provide references and search engines, and to allow authors to have links from their article while still keeping the article on the screen.

The Kairos shell is divided into 6 different frames (see figure 1), each with its own unique abilities.

Frame 1- Title
This frame includes the title information. Users can click on the Kairos logo at any time to display the Kairos homepage in the Reference area (frame 6).

Frame 2- Issue Information
This frame displays information about the issue number you are currently viewing.

Frame 3- Table of Contents and Articles
This is where the Table of Contents (TOC) and all articles in the journal are displayed.

Frame 4- Navigation Bar
These buttons are used to navigate through the journal. There are two different forms of this bar—figure 2 is on the homepage while figure 3 (slightly altered for each section) will be at each section's location. A more thorough description of the navigation bars is as follows:

• The Table of Contents (figure 2): This bar includes several buttons:
  
  • HELP?- See this help screen
    
  • Call for Hypertexts- See the Kairos call for hypertexts for next issue
    
  • References- See a list of web sites selected by Kairos
    
  • Search Engines- See a list of search engines and input search queries
    
  • Contact Kairos- Send feedback to Kairos
    
  • Kairos- Go to the Kairos homepage
    
  
• Journal Sections (figure 3): The bars for each section of the journal are basically identical, except at the top and bottom where the section header and the section icon are located. The buttons on these bars are identical to those in the table of contents bar except a button that is included for returning to the TOC.

When you click on any of these buttons, the result will be displayed in frame 6, the Reference area. The exception is the TOC button, which will be displayed in the TOC and Articles area (frame 3).

Frame 5- Article Links
Articles that have links that reference URLs outside of the journal are displayed here. In order to view information in this frame you will probably have to resize that frame by clicking on its left edge and dragging the border to the desired size. This will cause the TOC and Articles area (frame 3) to shrink correspondingly. You still can follow any links that are in the TOC and Articles area (frame 5), but following any links will replace the currently displayed information in frame 5 with the new information.

Frame 6- Reference
This area displays the results of clicking on any button or linking in the navigation bar (frame 4). In order to view information in this frame you will probably have to resize that frame by clicking on its top edge and dragging the border to the desired size. This will cause the above frames to shrink correspondingly. You can follow any links that are in the Reference area, but following any links will replace the currently displayed information with the new information.

Navigating in the Kairos Shell
Using the Netscape Buttons: Although the navigational icons at the top of the Netscape browser still work, they may not work in the way you expect. Because the Kairos Shell is actually one URL.

• The Backward and Forward Arrows will move you in and out of the shell, back to the last URL you were at, even though links within the journal will change individual frames. For example, if you were at your university's homepage and then opened the current Kairos issue (http://english.ttu.edu/kairos/1.1/archival/index.html) and browsed for a while, when you clicked on the Netscape "back" button you would return to your university's homepage instead of a previous page within the Kairos shell. To move back and forth in an individual frame, click once in that frame to make it the active frame, then click and hold the mouse button (right mouse button in Windows) anywhere within the frame, except on an actual link. A pop-up menu will appear and you can choose to move Back or Forward in the frame.

• Reload will reload the Kairos shell, taking it back to the TOC. This means that if you are reading an article and press the reload button, it will be replaced by the TOC.

• Print will print whatever is in the active frame. To make a frame active, simply click in the desired frame.

• Search will allow you to perform a search in the frame in which you are active.

The Table of Contents: Clicking on the icon or title for a particular section of the journal at the top of the TOC will take you to a list of articles for that section (located at the bottom of the TOC). Clicking on the icon or title here (the bottom of the TOC) will take you back to the top of the TOC.

Returning to the Table of Contents: To return to the TOC after reading an article or at any time, use the "Table of Contents" button in the navigation bar (frame 4).

Opening a Link in a New Window: If you wish to open a link in a new window, hold down the mouse button (right mouse button in Windows) while clicking on the link. A pop-up menu will appear, giving you the option of opening the link in a new window. For example, if you were in a featured article and wanted to look at a link without leaving the current page, you would select this option so that you could view both pages concurrently.
